Agrarian reform and rights of peasants, farm workers and fisherfolk
The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) Commission No. 6 condemns the murder of indigenous activist Berta Cáceres!
Cáceres was the cofounder of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Movements of Honduras (COPINH) and the 2015 winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize. She was recently leading a campaign against Desarrollos Energéticos, SA (DESA)’s Agua Zarca, a proposed hydroelectric dam project supported by the World Bank and USAID which is to be built on the territory of the indigenous Lenca people of Río Blanco.
In 2012, the Sinohydro group, also supported by the World Bank attempted to build the project but with the militant actions of the Lenca people and with COPINH leading a national and international campaign against the destructive project, both Sinohydro and the World Bank eventually pulled out.
On this day, March 14, as the world observes the International Day of Action for Rivers and Against Dams, we honour comrade Berta’s life offered in service of the people. ILPS Commission No. 6, stands with the people of Honduras in their cry for justice and in holding the US-backed government of Honduras accountable for the death of Comrade Berta Caceres!
Justice for Berta Caceres!
Uphold the right of indigenous peoples!
Resist imperialist plunder!
Down with imperialism!
