Excitement and militancy mark first day of ILPS 6th International Assembly

United under the theme “Win a bright Socialist future for humanity! Unite the people to fight and end imperialist war, racism, and Fascism,” more than 425 delegates from 45 countries assembled on the first day of the 6th International Assembly of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) held on 23 June 2019 in Hong Kong.

The Assembly was formally opened by ILPS Vice Chairperson Len Cooper welcoming the delegates with warm militant greetings of solidarity. Cooper recalled how from its inception in 2001, the ILPS has now grown into the world’s biggest and most effective international alliance engaged in anti-imperialist and democratic struggles.

Likewise, Len Cooper of Australia expressed his gratitude and admiration to the delegates in braving and overcoming the obstacles in coming to the Assembly including attempts by certain governments to prevent them from doing so.

He said that the theme of the 6th International Assembly is timely and fitting: “Win a bright socialist future for humanity! Unite the people to fight and end imperialist war, racism and fascism!” Amidst the havoc being wreaked by imperialism against the countries and peoples’ of the world, the ILPS is committed to build a society without exploitation, without classes, without borders, without wars.

The composition of the presidium was introduced to the Assembly and the delegates were reminded about the upcoming nominations for the new members of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC). For their hard work and diligence during their term, the members of the outgoing ICC were honored and recognized.

Addressing the Assembly as keynote speaker, Nilufer Koc of the Kurdistan National Congress commemorated the martyrs of the revolution who offered their lives to realize the common goal of building a truly democratic and Socialist future. Koc related the powerful role of women and the grassroots in guaranteeing the success of the revolution and defeating imperialism. “Once you bring the people together, they are the biggest power for the revolution,” Koc stated.

Pedro Rosas, the second keynote speaker representing Movimiento Gayones expressed gratefulness for the support Venezuelans have garnered in their fight against US imperialist aggression. The long tradition of struggle in Latin America is being bolstered amidst complex contradictions. Rosas also related their efforts in clearly depicting the situation in Venezuela. During the open forum, Rosas reiterated that Venezuela does not need foreign charity but the international solidarity of all proletarians in the world to face the common principal enemy which is imperialism.

In the afternoon session, ILPS Chairperson Jose Maria “Joma” Sison delivered his report to the 6th ILPS International Assembly. He called on the Assembly to celebrate the achievements of the ILPS. He said that the ILPS has proven itself “as a reliable force of the people of the world in their struggle for greater freedom, democracy, social justice, all-around development and international solidarity against imperialism and all reaction.”

He cited the global capitalist crisis that not only accelerates the US strategic decline but likewise, advances the resistance of the broad masses of the people. Sison described the “unprecedented barbarism” being perpetrated against the people through ceaseless wars of aggression, racism and fascism.

He also said that the crisis has intensified the inter-imperialist contradictions and their lust for the redivision of the world. However, they also find ways to accommodate one another and connive in their exploitation and oppression of the people of the world.

Sison then cited the need to further expand the influence of the ILPS and strengthen the struggle against imperialism by forming an international anti-imperialist united front together with other progressive anti-imperialist forces around the world.

The Assembly overwhelmingly approved the resolution put forward by the ICC appointing Sison as Chairperson Emeritus of the ILPS.

For his invaluable contributions to the ILPS, the resolution enumerated the roles he served since the League was conceptualized and formed in 2001 when he chaired its International Initiative Committee.

He likewise served as General Consultant of ILPS from 2001 to 2004 and as Chairperson of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) from 2004 to 2019.

Internal Vice Chairperson Antonio Tujan described Joma Sison as a visionary and a tactician at the same time. He said that Sison was a staunch and indefatigable alliance builder.

Antonio Tujan, Vice Chairperson for Internal Affairs, Malcolm Guy (Canada), General Secretary and Veerle Verschueren (Belgium), Treasurer also gave their reports regarding the efforts of the League to expand and strengthen the ILPS in order to be more effective in advancing the anti-imperialist and democratic struggles of the people of the world.

The first day of the 6th International Assembly – International League of Peoples’ Struggles was concluded with discussions on ICC resolutions and preparations for commission workshops. Special fora and discussion groups are expected to be assembled later in the evening after the official launching of the two latest books authored by Prof. Jose Maria Sison, entitled Combat Tyranny and Fascism and Struggle Against Terrorism and Tyranny.###
