Whereas, for the first time since World War II, bombs, missiles and artillery shells are raining down on the people of Donetsk, Lugansk, Slavyansk, and other cities and towns of eastern Ukraine, killing civilians, including children, damaging homes, schools and hospitals and creating a humanitarian crisis;
Whereas, the “Ukrainian National Guard” perpetrating these crimes is commanded by direct political descendants of Hitler’s Hilfswilliger (Willing Helpers), Ukrainian Nazis of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) who served the Third Reich during World War II, and these forces now work primarily in the paid service of the US imperialist ruling class and it’s state apparatus, and that they are being assisted in their crimes by US mercenary contractors such as the notorious Blackwater company, now renamed Academic;
Whereas, these fascist gangs, such as the Right Sector and Svoboda, who proudly display symbols not only of the Third Reich but of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States, have unleashed a reign of terror across the Ukraine, burning down the trade union building in Odessa, killing at least 42 people inside and attacking the members and offices of the Communist Party, Borotba and other anti-fascist organizations and have murdered Ukrainian Army soldiers who refused orders to attack the people of Donetsk and Lugansk;
Whereas, the cause of the crisis in Ukraine is the US-and European Union backed and –funded coup of Feb. 23, which ousted an elected government and imposed a right wing pro-imperialist, pro-IMF austerity regime that has already slashed old-age pensions and public sector wages, raised utility prices as well as taken oppressive measures against Ukraine’s large Russian-speaking population;
Whereas, the people of Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts in eastern Ukraine, home to the majority of the country’s industrial working class asserted their democratic right to reject the rule of the imperialist-imposed pro-Wall Street coup regime in Kiev;
Whereas, the objective of Washington and Wall Street in this crisis is to increase their role in the region while attempting to weaken Russia by provoking civil war in Ukraine in order to disrupt the flow of Russian gas and oil to Europe so as to restore the stranglehold that US energy monopolies once held on the European market, as well as to justify expanding NATO and putting US military bases onto the soil of the former Soviet Union; and
Whereas, imperialist politicians and media in the US and West Europe and their agents in Kiev have falsely characterized the people’s resistance in Donetsk and Lugansk as a “Russian invasion” and falsely portrayed the people’s defense units in east Ukraine as “terrorists” and “Russian infiltrators” in order to “justify” their bloody agenda.
Therefore, be it resolved that the International League of Peoples’ Struggle stands in solidarity with the heroic people of Donetsk and Lugansk in their anti-fascist and anti-imperialist struggle for democracy and self-determination, and we stand with all those all over Ukraine who are resisting the imperialist-imposed dictatorial austerity regime; and
Be it further resolved, that we condemn and demand an immediate end to the brutal US-EU funded and -encouraged assault on the people of Donetsk and Lugansk so that they may determine their own destiny and that we demand an end to the repression of progressive and democratic forces across Ukraine; and
Be it further resolved, that we say no to NATO expansion and demand an end to US, EU and NATO intervention and interference, overt and covert, military or financial, in Ukraine and all former Soviet republics, and the withdrawal of all US and other imperialist military forces and covert operatives from East Europe and the former USSR.
