The umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN, New Patriotic Alliance) today joined peace advocates in a global day of fasting and prayer to call for a stop to the impending US airstrikes on Syria. The call for a 7 September day of fasting and prayer was made by Pope Francis who issued a statement opposing the imminent US attack on Syria.
“To the leaders present, to each and every one, I make a heartfelt appeal for them to help find ways to overcome the conflicting positions and to lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution,” Pope Francis wrote in the letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin who is hosting this year’s G20 summit.
“Rather, let there be a renewed commitment to seek, with courage and determination, a peaceful solution through dialogue and negotiation of the parties, unanimously supported by the international community.”
In the Philippines, peace advocates and anti-war activists will gather at the Boy Scout Monument in Quezon City today at 4:00pm to offer prayers, light candles and issue a call to the Philippine president to denounce the US war.
“Bayan stands with the rest of the world in opposing the Obama regime’s planned airstrike on Syria. It is a blatant violation of international law. It is a violation of the sovereignty of one country. It is also a clear threat to the Filipinos working in Syria and to the thousands of Filipinos working in the Middle East,” said Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr.
“The Philippine government under Benigno Aquino III should now break its silence on the matter. For the sake of the Filipinos in Syria and the Middle East, and in accordance with our obligations under International Law, the Philippine government must add its voice to the growing opposition against the impending US airstrike,” Reyes said.
Bayan believes that the Aquino government remains supportive of the US thrusts worldwide including a strategic pivot to Asia which would bring more US troops and ships to the Philippines. However, the group cautioned that stationing US troops in the Philippines, in a time when the US is engaged in wars abroad, makes the Philippines complicit and supportive of US military intervention.
“The US war in Syria, and the US pivot in Asia, are all part of US imperialism’s agenda to dominate the world militarily, politically and economically. It is borne out of the desperate need to overcome an ever-deepening economic crisis. The US wants to control more regions and more resources and is prepared to go to war just so they can advance this agenda,” Reyes said.
“Our foreign policy must not be tied to the imperialist agenda of the US. Aquino should speak out against the impending US airstrikes. Aquino should reject the US strategic pivot which has the potential to drag our country into other conflicts instigated by the US. If the Pope can denounce the war, why can’t Aquino? Is he that beholden to the US?” he asked.
