Resolution on Tamil refugees recently arrived in Canada aboard the MV Sun Sea

Resolution proposed and approved
during the meeting of the International Coordinating Group
International League of Peoples’ Struggle
20-21 August 2010

On August 13, 2010, 490 Tamil women, children and men, refugees from Sri Lanka, arrived off the coast of Western Canada aboard the MV Sun Sea;

Instead of opening their arms to these tired travellers who have been searching for refuge for months on the high seas, the Canadian government immediately confined them in centres, nothing more than “prisons” for refugees;

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) denounces this horrifying action on the part of the Canadian government, supported by certain reactionary media outlets, which has demonized these desperate people, once again calling them “terrorists”;

We demand that the 490 Tamil women, children and men fleeing an unjust and reactionary government in Sri Lanka be treated with dignity and accepted as the genuine refugees that they are;

The massacre and genocide in Sri Lanka are a result of the imperialist-backed “war on terror”, in fact a war of terror against all those fighting for justice and freedom. We demand that those in Sri Lanka responsible for the bloody crimes against the Tamil people, up to the highest levels of government and the armed forces, be brought to justice. As long as they remain in power and their crimes go unpunished there will be no viable peace in Sri Lanka and Tamil refugees will continue to seek shelter and asylum;

We join with our sisters and brothers around the globe in pushing for genuine peace, justice and freedom for Tamils in Sri Lanka.
