during the meeting of the International Coordinating Group
International League of Peoples’ Struggle
20-21 August 2010
The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) condemns the Taiwan-owned Foxconn Technology Group (makers of Apple iPhones, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Sony games consoles, etc.) for its extreme exploitation of the Chinese workers in Foxconn factories situated in China and which resulted in the suicides of several workers. The ILPS also holds responsible the China government for allowing such exploitation instead of protecting the workers.
Fourteen (14) workers aged 18-24 committed suicide due to excessive overtime and the Foxconn management’s severe military type disciplinary actions against the workers. The overtime and disciplinary actions caused so much pressure and stress that drove the workers to suicide.
Foxconn employs and exploits almost 400,000 people in Shenzhen, southern China were the suicides occurred from January to May this year.
The ILPS demands Foxconn Technology to:
Stop forced overtime
Stop its military style management
Stop harassment of workers
Improve the working conditions of the workers
Respect the rights of the workers to form unions
