International League of Peoples’ Struggle
5-6 June 2014
Whereas, the giant transnational conglomerate Veolia Group, aided by Boston Mayor Michael Walsh and the corporate media, are waging a union-busting campaign against the Boston school bus drivers’ union United Steelworkers Local 8751, a leading practitioner of social unionism in the United States of America;
Whereas, this anti-labor assault began with the firing on false charges of union leaders Andre Francois, Steve Gillis, Steve Kirschbaum and Garry Murchison last October;
Whereas, the 900 members of Local 8751, which was born in the struggle against school segregation, have long been in the vanguard of the US labor movement not only in consistently fighting for and winning strong contracts for their members but in active solidarity not only with other unions but with people’s struggles in the United States and around the world;
Whereas, the Veolia Group, including Veolia Transdev, Veolia Environmental Services and Veolia Water, is a leading force in privatizing public services and attacking public-service workers worldwide and that its anti-people practices include operating a segregated rail system in occupied Palestine; and
Whereas, Local 8751’s contract expires on June 30, 2014, and Local 8751 has called for global solidarity on that day.
Therefore, be it resolved that the International League of Peoples’ Struggle stands with the workers of Local 8751 in their just demand that the fired union leaders be rehired and for a decent union contract; and
Be it further resolved that we call upon our country chapters and member organizations to support the international day of protest against Veolia on 30 June 2014.
